On the afternoon of October 18, 2018, the signing ceremony of the bilateral international exchange and cooperation agreement between the Department of Biomedical Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Department of Bio and Brain Engineering of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) was successfully held at the Med-X Research Institute in Xuhui Campus. From the SJTU Biomedical Engineering Department, Party Secretary Ji Bo, Vice Dead Tong Shanbao, Director of KAIST Department of Bio and Brain Engineering Kwang-Hyun Cho, and 24 professors and scholars of neuroscience and engineering, biomedical instrumentation, nano-biomaterials, etc. from both institute attended the symposium. Of them, twelve were from KAIST’s Academic Visiting Group and the event was hosted by Professor Tong Shanbao. The official signing of the international cooperation agreement between the two parties is an important achievement of this first bilateral academic conference.

The symposium lasted two days, with events held in Wenxuan Medical Building in the Minhang Campus and in the Med-X Research Institute in Xuhui Campus. The welcoming ceremony and meeting was held in the 323 conference room of the Wenxuan Medical Building on the afternoon of the 17th. At the meeting, Professor Tong Shanbao hosted the meeting and delivered a welcoming speech. He extended sincere greetings and warm welcomes to the academic delegation of from KAIST. At the same time, he introduced SJTU’s history, faculty, research status, international standing, etc. Professor Kwang-Hyun Cho then elaborated on the development process and current situation of KAIST, especially the internationalization of research and teaching.

The Summary Meeting was held on the afternoon of the 18th, Party Secretary Ji Bo held a speech at the signing conference on behalf of Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Biomedical Engineering Department. He extended a warm welcome to the arrival of the KAIST academic delegation. He spoke highly of KAIST's first-class academic influence in both Asia and internationally and expressed his hope for follow-up cooperation. In his speech, he mentioned that KAIST is known as the "MIT in Asia" and it is the cradle of Korean basic science and high-tech research. He then stated that it is very similar to the history and positioning of SJTU in China. He emphasized that the official signing of the bilateral international cooperation and exchange agreement between SJTU and KAIST in the field of biomedical engineering is another strong alliance in both Asia and internationally. This agreement will not only be a good start for long-term cooperation between the two parties, it will also promote mutual improvement in international teaching, research, and curriculum design.
