Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) established the Discipline of Biomedical Engineering (BME) in 1979, which was one of the first universities in China to establish the Discipline of BME. Since its founding, in the spirit of 'Dare to become a pioneer, and search for excellence', the faculty and staff of BME have made significant progress in research, education, and development. It has constantly been a leading BME program in China: The Discipline is a Key Discipline of the Nation, which has been ranked in the top three in all of the three national evaluations since 2002. The Discipline of BME has become a 'Star Discipline' of SJTU.The school of biomedical engineering’s mission is to build an internationally recognized institute for biomedical research and education, taking the leadership in interdisciplinary research, internationalization, and clinical translation of biomedical engineering. The school is dedicated to educate the future biomedical engineers for innovation of the cutting-edge biomedical technologies and medical systems, supporting the fast-developing economy and demand of healthcare in China.
On April 8, 2011, the University's 115th anniversary, the School of BME was established by the merge of SJTU Med-X Research Institute, an institute dedicated to interdisciplinary research on medicine and engineering/physical sciences, and the former SJTU Department of BME. With the combined resources, the School of BME has reorganized its research and educational programs with great emphasis on 'Translational Research' and 'Internationalization' as its key developmental strategies towards international excellence.
In the School of BME, currently there are 80 primary faculty members, including 19 full professors and 39 associate professors. Our faculty members have received numerous accolades and honors, including membership in the National Academy of Engineering of China, Distinguished Professorships by both the national and municipal One- Thousand Talent Programs, National Outstanding Young Investigators, and 'Chang Jiang National Distinguished Professorships'. Among our faculty members, there are two Chief Scientists of '973 Program' National Basic Research Center Grants, which belong to most significant center grants in China. Our faculty members have also been elected as the Fellows of several major professional societies, including AAAS, ASME, AIMBE, and SPIE. A number of the faculty members have served as Associate Editors or members of the editorial board of international journals such as Nanomedicine, Stroke, Journal of Cytometry Part A, IEEE Trans. On Information Technology in Biomedicine, IEEE Trans. on Information Technology in Biomedicine, International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery, and International Journal of Biomedical Imaging.
Currently, there are 187 undergraduate students and 191 graduate students in the School of BME. There are six academic areas in the school, including Biomedical Instrumentation, Neuroscience and Engineering, Medical Imaging and Informatics, Nano-Biomaterials, Systems Biology and Medicine, and Biological Sciences and Diseases, on a broad interdisciplinary basis. The School of BME is located in both the Wenxuan Medical Research Building in SJTU Minghang campus and the Med-X Building in SJTU Xuhui Campus, which occupies over 10,000 square meters of space. The research in the school is supported by a comprehensive central facility. The total value of the equipment in the central facility is over sixteen millions RMB.
Since its merging with Shanghai Second Medical University in 2005, the University has determined that cross disciplinary research between clinicalmedicineand engineering/physical sciences is essential and critical for the creation of new knowledge and to meet the national needs. As a major step to implement this strategy, Med-X Research Institute was established in 2011 as a major platform to promote close collaborations between the affiliated hospitals and academic departments on different campuses. The institute is managed directly by the University, with its main mission to conduct cross-disciplinary and translational medical research. Within the last several years, multiple established investigators from internationally renowned institutions have been recruited as full-time faculty members of the institute. In Med-X Research Institute, there are four research centers, including 'Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Medical Equipment and Technology, Med-X', 'Engineering Research Center of Digital Medicine and Clinical Translation, Chinese Ministry of Education', 'SJTU Institute of Rehabilitation Engineering', and 'SJTU Nano Biomedical Research Center'. Med-X Research Center has also established five joint research centers with the affiliated hospitals of SJTU, including Ruijin Hospital, Renji Hospital, Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital, and Shanghai Mental Health Center.
During the last 35 years, the faculty members of SJTU BME Discipline have made significant achievements in research and public service: Several faculty members obtained research awards including the First Prize of National Science & Technology Advancement Award; the faculty members have numerous research articles published in leading international journals; and multiple major international research conferences have been organized by the faculty of the school. The faculty members have also made major achievements in both undergraduate and graduate education: Approximately 1,200 students have graduated from the BME Discipline since its founding in 1979. Two graduate students have obtained 'One-Hundred Outstanding Dissertations of the Nation Award'. The alumni of the Discipline of BME have made significant contributions to society, industry, education and science. Among the most noted are Dr. Guanghan Xu, an awardee of the First Prize of National Science & Technology Advancement Award, and Mr. Minghe Chen, a co-founder of Mindray Corporation.
Although the School of BME has had glorious history, the faculty, staff and students of the school believe that the best time of development is still in the future. They are striving to develop the school rapidly into a world-class research platform on interdisciplinary research on medicine and engineering/physical science.
