The goal of the BME Undergraduate Program at Shanghai Jiao Tong University is to provide excellent and comprehensive BME education to students. We expect the students: (1) To be able to succeed in the practice of engineering or other professional activities; (2) to become leaders in academia, industry or business. We attract and admit motivated and talented high school graduates who plan to pursue their careers in the field of medical instrumentation, medical imaging and informatics, neuroscience and neuroengineering, biomaterials and nano-technology, or biomedical sciences. Students will be challenged to analyze and solve problems from both engineering and medicine perspective. The BME Undergraduate Program at SJTU has constantly ranked as one of the best BME undergraduate programs in China (ranked 1st in a most influential report of Chinese university ranking). Currently there are about 200 undergraduate students pursuing Bachelor degrees in BME in the School of BME. The undergraduate curriculum is designed to be completed in 4 years, which provides a strong foundation in mathematics, engineering, science, as well as humanities and social sciences. Through careful planning or by utilizing advanced placement credits, students have the flexibility to pursue minors, study abroad in exchange programs, or graduate early. Every 4-5 students have an assigned faculty adviser, who can provide consultation and to monitor their academic progress. In recent years, more than 70% of the BME undergraduate students at SJTU have continued to pursue graduate degrees (Master degrees or Ph.D. degrees). Over 35% of the BME undergraduate students have entered the BS-MS or BS-Ph.D. Programs at SJTU. The students have rich opportunities to enter the exchange programs Undergraduate Education with the universities in USA, UK, Germany, France, Sweden, Hong Kong, and Taiwan to gain international experience. The international study programs include a summer research program with Johns Hopkins University, a summer research program with University of Minnesota, and a design program with Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. There are a variety of scholarships for undergraduate students, such as Biomedical Engineering Alumni Scholarship, Micro Port Scholarship, Lu Yuejiao Scholarship, and Ivy Alumni Scholarship. More than 1200 students have graduated from this program. They have been working in a broad range of institutions and in industry, including medical device companies, hospitals, medical research facilities and regulatory agencies of government, IT companies, consulting firms, financial institutions, biotechnology firms, and pharmaceutical companies. Some entrepreneurial students have started their own companies.
