Medical Imaging & Informatics

The mission of the Medical Imaging and Informatics Area is to develop novel medical imaging, medical image processing and image analysis methods and technologies for diagnosis and therapy of diseases, and to obtain the accurate structural and functional information of living body. Interdisciplinary education and training are provided to our students.

Currently, the Area has 8 faculty members, including Professors Jun Zhao, Lixu Gu, and Hao Gao, Associate Professors Qian Wang, Binjie Qin, Qiu Huang, and Haibo Hu. The major research directions of the field include: CT reconstruction algorithm, MRI reconstruction algorithm, synchrotron imaging, PET imaging, SPECT imaging, optical imaging, pattern recognition, computer vision, medical image processing, computer graphic, image-guided surgery and therapy, and virtual reality. In the recent five years, the faculty members of the Area have made a number of scientific contributions in the field of multi-source CT reconstruction method, sparse reconstruction, PRISM (prior rank, intensity and sparsity model), sparse shape model based liver surgery planning, and group-wise registration.

The faculty members of the Area have a wide range of national and international collaborations with hospitals, industries and other universities, including Ruijin Hospital, Renji Hospital, Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital, Shanghai Mental Health Center, Shanghai Children's Hospital, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Emory University, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Robarts Research Institute, and GE. During the last five years, the faculty members of the Area have obtained 8 national research grants, published over 50 SCI papers, and have filed 9 patent applications. The faculty members have also obtained 5 research awards or honors.

The faculty members of the Area have also acted as Associate Editors for a number of international scientific journals such as IEEE Trans. on Information Technology in Biomedicine, International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery, and Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering: Imaging & Visualization, and International Journal of Biomedical Imaging. They have also served as council/board members of national/international academic societies such as IEEE EMBS program committee, IEEE ISBI organize committee, CARS program committee, Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering, Chinese Institute of Electronics, and Chinese Society of Medical Imaging.
